Sealing drywall joints with tape

One of the most important things to do when installing drywall is to properly seal the joints between the panels for a smooth and long-lasting finish. This procedure fortifies the structure and produces a smooth appearance, thereby averting the formation of cracks over time. A tried-and-true technique for reinforcing these joints and making sure your walls or ceilings stay in excellent condition is the use of tape.

For caulking drywall joints, there are various tape varieties available, each with unique benefits. Knowing how to apply tape correctly can have a significant impact on the outcome, regardless of experience level. This applies to both novice and seasoned drywall installers. Although it calls for some attention to detail, with the correct assistance, the task is completely doable.

This post will guide you through the process of using tape to seal drywall joints, from choosing the right kind to correctly applying it. It is possible to attain a polished, long-lasting finish by adhering to these guidelines.

Step Description
1. Prepare the surface Clean the drywall joints, ensuring they are free of dust and debris.
2. Apply joint compound Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the seam with a putty knife.
3. Place the tape Center the tape over the joint and press it into the compound.
4. Smooth the tape Use the putty knife to smooth the tape, removing air bubbles and excess compound.
5. Apply second coat Once dry, apply a second coat of joint compound over the tape.
6. Sand the surface After the compound dries, lightly sand the surface until smooth.
7. Finish Prime and paint the wall as desired for a seamless finish.

Required materials

The GKL joint creates visible seams that need to be correctly sealed; even the smallest detail matters greatly because it affects how the finishing work will look.

The procedure is intricate; different parts are used to ensure that the seal maintains its qualities over time without developing tears or cracks.

How are drywall joints sealed? The following equipment needs to be ready by the master:

  1. Spatula.
  2. Putty.
  3. A plane for chamfering.
  4. Special paper tape for plasterboard joints.
  5. Electric drill with attachment and mixing container.
  6. Sandpaper and construction knife.

A spatula is an essential tool. Seamsealing and leveling the completed work will be the primary tasks carried out with it. The tool should be the most manageable size for the person using it. Specific characteristics apply when sealing joints in difficult-to-reach areas; these are covered in more detail below. Flexibility is the primary requirement for a spatula; if the blade bends readily, it is fit for use.

Although there are other kinds of putty, artisans believe that "Uniflot," a product of the German company "Knauf," is the strongest and most resilient. They also use another, but this one’s quality is guaranteed, particularly because it fits the Knauf tape for plasterboard seams flawlessly on it. It should be mentioned that this putty works well for additional painting. For instance, ordinary finishing putty is only useful if you intend to adhere wallpaper to the drywall; it is not appropriate for painting.

To apply the putty, the drywall joints must be chamfered, which requires a plane.

Construction stores sell a variety of reinforcing tape for sealing drywall joints. Qualities:

  • it must be durable, manufacturers specially increase its quality;
  • Knauf drywall joint tape must allow air to pass through so that air bubbles do not appear in the future;
  • there are varieties, for example, metallized tapes, which have increased strength.

Another option is to use a specific type of reinforcing mesh, which is made up of square cells cut to a specific size and improves joint sealing.

Simply crumple the mesh in your hands, stretch it slightly, and then straighten it to determine if it is a high-quality drywall seam mesh for installation. If the mesh is elastic and the cells hold their shape, then it is a good material.

An unique attachment on the electric drill allows for quick and excellent putty mixing. This occurs slowly in a relatively wide container.

Crucial! Fundamentally, speed matters because the higher the speed, the more air is incorporated into the mixture, decreasing its durability.

It works best to combine the putty in small amounts and apply the finished mixture to the surface right away.

Putty joints that have already dried can be cleaned with fine-grain sandpaper or grinding mesh.

Step-by-step process of sealing drywall seams

It takes a lot of work to seal drywall seams, so you have to be very careful and cautious. Only temperatures above plus 10 degrees Celsius and moderate humidity—which shouldn’t go above 60%—allow for productive work indoors.

  1. First of all, for sealing the drywall seams, the surface must be prepared for work: remove dust with a vacuum cleaner, remove the remains of the solution and any other irregularities with a spatula. It is held at an angle of about 30 degrees and carried out along the joints of the drywall.

The screws need to be recessed into the drywall to a depth of approximately 1 mm in areas where their heads protrude.

  1. In the right places, the chamfer is beveled. It is done with a special tool – a plane. It is done only at the cut edge; there is no need to make a chamfer on the ends of the factory edge of the gypsum board, everything is already prepared there. It is cut at an angle of 22-45 degrees from both ends, which allows you to apply the putty in a more convenient way and do the whole job more efficiently. The processed joints of the drywall must be coated with a primer with deep permeability. It is applied with a roller: with it, the primer fully penetrates the surface of the cut edges.

Crucial! It is not necessary to attempt creating a chamfer using a regular construction knife!

The end can only be cut accurately and at the same angle by one type of plane, known as an edge plane.

  1. After applying the primer, you should wait a day until it dries, then you can start puttying. As already said, when choosing a putty, further plans are important: when painting, one type of substance is used, when gluing wallpaper – another. Here you need to strictly follow the instructions, because amateur activity can lead to mistakes, rapid wear, loss of attractive appearance, etc.D. Putty mixtures for sealing drywall joints are produced in various forms, have a gray-beige color.

Take note! You should prepare the putty with its short half-life in mind—less than 20 minutes. Gradually dilute the mixture.

  1. The finished mixture of the consistency of sour cream is applied to the joints of the drywall evenly. Self-tapping screws recessed to a shallow depth are also carefully puttyed. Afterwards, a wide spatula is used – for leveling.
  2. Afterwards, the plasterboard seams are sealed with tape – it is attached directly to the wet putty. Then the surface is also smoothed with a spatula.

Paper tape for joints in plasterboard Knauf strengthens the seam and fortifies the mixture that has been applied, preventing cracks from forming. To avoid bubbles, use high-quality tapes instead of regular paper ones. Certain reinforcing tapes, for instance, have a high strength, can safely absorb moisture, and allow air to pass through. The middle of the joint is where the tape should go.

  1. After drying, you need to carefully grout the joints of the plasterboard with sandpaper.

Suggestions. It is advised to wear a respirator because this work generates a lot of dust.

Applying a primer to these areas is advised once all the work is finished.

One of the most important steps in producing seamless, smooth walls that are prepared for painting or finishing is to seal drywall joints with tape. Applying joint tape correctly will strengthen the joints, stop cracks, and guarantee a surface that looks professional. This procedure is necessary to achieve a faultless finish in any room because it strengthens the wall’s durability and improves its appearance.

Important nuances

Durability is a primary necessity for plasterboard seam sealing with tape in order to prevent unsightly cracks. In order to accomplish this, you should confirm the following:

  • that the plasterboards are installed correctly, on a rigid metal frame. Metal profile plays the fundamental role. It should be sure that the details of the profile are placed and fixed in the correct way, especially speaking about attachment to ceilings;
  • The connection of the profile for drywall with each other should be just under the joint, which is planned to be launched. A frame is required: only it can ensure the stability of the entire structure. This is a fairly accurate work – the center of the profile should coincide with the center of the junction – in this case, the sealing of the tape seams of the drywall will be reliable;
  • The chamfer on the wiped edges must be mandatory. Otherwise, the tape and the seam itself can simply burst.

There won’t be any issues at the drywall joints if these considerations are made.

When working in difficult-to-reach areas, specifically where joints are located in corners, you should abide by the following advice:

  • since this is a corner, and only it should be covered with putty, the mixture should be placed only on one side of the working tool – the part of the spatula that will be in contact with the corner joint, first on one side, then on the other;
  • to avoid microcracks, it is recommended to fill the seams with putty in a high-quality manner;
  • when attaching the tape, it must first be folded in half; after application, smooth it out with a spatula;

It is advised to carefully read the information on the packaging before selecting a putty because certain varieties are meant for different tasks and cannot hold the reinforcing tape.

Smooth, long-lasting walls that withstand the test of time require proper drywall joint tape sealing. When done properly, this process strengthens the structural integrity of your walls and improves their appearance by halting the development of cracks and other problems over time.

Applying tape carefully and with the appropriate kind of tape is essential to success. Make sure to firmly embed the tape—paper or mesh—into a layer of joint compound, smoothing out any wrinkles or air bubbles. This focus on the little things will guarantee a flawless finish.

Recall that patience is essential. Give each compound layer enough time to fully dry before sanding and applying the next. Painting or wallpapering will be easier and more successful with this methodical approach, which will produce a clean, polished look.

These easy steps will help you finish your drywall perfectly, giving your walls a polished appearance and getting them ready for the next phase of your project.
